The focus this month: Think win-win

We are on week 6 of our 7x7 contract. The 7x7 helps us reconnect with the 'why' behind all we do.  Week 6 guide

Our first Leadership Day will take place on March 23rd. Parent day is March 22nd.

Auditions for Leadership Day positions will be held on Friday starting at 1:00pm in the Depot.  All students interested in applying for a position should prepare a 1 minute speech about B.T. Bullock and leadership.  It can be memorized or written down. Applicants should focus on:  1) controlling themselves while waiting for their audition time, speaking clearly and loudly, looking at their audience, and holding themselves confidentially.  We will have reminders on the news as well.

Please make sure your bulletin boards are updated as we approach Leadership Day.  There are some blank boards in the building.  Please use the bulletin boards to showcase rigorous and exemplary student work.  Please make sure all bulletin boards are updated no later than March 16th.

More resources are located at the Leader in Me website.
You can also follow Sarah Ann's blog at sarahanntaylor.org or email her at sarahann.taylor@franklincovey.com.

For several weeks, I included information about Costa's Level of questioning.  I would like to revisit those question levels and challenge all teachers to review the questions being used for nightly reading responses, independent work and small groups to ensure that the questioning used is rigorous and higher-level.  Ideally, we want our students to spend more time on Costa level 2 and 3.

Examples:

Costa level 1 - Who is favorite character and why? (describing)
Costa level 2 - Compare and contrast_________ with ___________.  Use details from the story. (compare and contrast)

Costa level 1 - What is the setting of the story?  (recall)
Costa level 2 - Explain ________.  Use details from the story. (explaining)

SIT meeting: SIT will be meeting tomorrow, February 29th from 3:00-4:00pm in the Platform.

AR Spring Testing window (3-5 only):  AR screening window continues through March 4th.

Student led conferences:  Our first stab at student led conferences at B.T. Bullock were a huge success.  4th grade teachers tried student-led conferences as a grade level.  They held all their conferences in 1 hour (wow, that is a time saver!) and the students led rich and meaningful conversations about their learning.  A win-win! Ms. Townsend also held student-led conferences in 3rd grade which much success.  Ms. Townsend has graciously shared the materials she used and was open to sharing those materials with all of you.  Thanks Mindy! Materials can be downloaded here

Bathroom Cleanliness:  We are in need of your help in our restrooms.  I will spare you the gross details, but it is suffice to say the restrooms smell unfresh.  Please remind students not to use excessive tissue paper, to flush the toilets and to never lock doors and crawl under bathroom doors.  Students should use the restrooms under adult supervision if at all possible.

Election on campus March 15th:  We will hold an election on our campus on March 15th  Teachers can do a provisional out-of-precinct vote at Bullock.  You will need to show your ID.

Tornado Drill: I know we are ready for this one.  The statewide tornado drill will be held March 9th at 9:30am.

Quarterly Tests:  The week of March 14th.

IMPORTANT....Instruction at Bullock: Please remember the high-yield strategies that need to be included in your instruction.

  • Reteach 2-3 concepts each day.
  • Include many opportunities for open-ended writing (with guidance and correction).
  • Use tutors for remediation and using research-based programs to help our struggling readers.

Our AVID Elementary site visit will be held on Thursday, February 18th.

We will have a notebook check on Monday, February 15th in the Depot at 1:00 for 4th grade and 1:45 for 5th grade. Students should bring their Leadership Notebooks and AVID notebooks.

________________________________________________

WIG progress:  We are still missing a few classrooms for our midyear WIG assessment.  We are currently at 33.6% of students showing growth based on mClass and quarterly scores.  That total will certainly change as the final scores are placed in the spreadsheet.

  • Our WIG:  Every child will increase reading skills based on their individual academic ability by the middle of the year mClass and/or Q2 quarterly assessments.

Bookroom:  Please remember to put books in the tub on the table rather than in the book tubs on the shelf.  Book bags will soon be available to make it easier for you to take materials back to your room.  Please make sure there is no food or drink in the book room.

Dress Code:  Due to several new employee joining us and very cold temperatures, I wanted to send a reminder and clarification about our dress code.  The full dress code can be found in our handbook.

  • Jeans can be worn on Friday with a Bullock or college shirt.  Jeans should not be worn with sweatshirts/tee shirts on Fridays.
  • Leggings are not part of the Bullock dress code.  However, due to cold weather leggings may be worn if they are worn as your would tights/hose with a dress or skirt that is an appropriate length.
Interview Team:  It is time to "begin with the end in mind" as we start looking ahead to the 2016-17 school year. It you would like to be on the Bullock interview team please send me an email.

Retention....reminder:  It is the time of year to start thinking about retention.  If you are considering retention for a child, please follow the following steps.  I will not consider retention for students in May/June.  We need to have conversations about retention early.
  1. Notify me in writing that you are considering retention.  Download the form located here to document.
  2. Set a meeting with the parents to discuss retention.  Document the meeting on this form (download and update dates).
  3. Meet with principal and specialists (EC/ESL) to discuss.
  4. Discuss the final determination with the parent.

Druthers:  I will place the Bullock druthers form in your mailbox on Monday. The form is located here.   The druthers form is the place to let me know if you would like to teach another grade level, move rooms, explore blocking, partner with a specific teacher/TA, etc.The druthers are confidential.  They are important to planning as I "seek to understand" before heading into next year.  Please complete by Monday, February 22nd.

ACCESS testing:  ACCESS testing this week from February 15th-19th.

AXA Advisor:  He will be on campus on Tuesday, February 16th in the back lobby.

Picture day: Class picture day is February 18th.  The schedule is located here.

Read-a-thon: Will be held February 19th

Career day:  Will be held on February 26th

Instruction at Bullock: I continue to hear rich conversations about improving students growth. An emerging theme in data conversations on grade levels, data team meetings and post-conferences is a need for more writing. Please revisit those Learning Focused strategies to infuse writing in the lessons you have planned.  A mini PD session can be found here.  If you are still seeking more direction on how to include more open-ended writing in your lessons, please schedule some time to meet with Cinderella, Lisa, Wendy or myself.  We would love to "talk shop" to help include more writing throughout the instructional day.

Professional Development:  Some professional development opportunities have been gathered together for you to delve into areas of teaching that would most benefit you.  The Bullock Spring PD menu is located here

AVID elementary site visits February 16th through 19th.

The "STAR" strategy in AVID refers to note taking. We have focused largely on the "ST" which refers to "setting up" and "taking notes."  The "AR" is adding to the notes and using them for review.

This week we'll explore the "Review Notes" component.  After students have completed their notes, and added additional information, they can use their notes to review.

  • Review notes regularly: weekly and before an assessment.  We want our students really using their notes.
  • Cover the notes then either rewrite the notes from memory or review aloud.
  • Reflect.  Summarize the notes; relate the subject to yourself and your personal experience.
  • Work with a Study Buddy whenever possible.
  • Recopy notes foe neatness and readability, if necessary.

Page 178 of the AVID Elementary Foundations manual has some great ideas.
________________________________________________

Ms. Gillette:  It is with a heavy heart that I share that Ms. Gillette will be leaving B.T. Bullock to pursue other endeavors on February 19th.  Mrs. Gillette's wisdom, wonderful personality and sweet smile will most certainly be missed.  We do wish her the best of luck.

New 5th grade teacher:  Ms. Dean will be taking Ms. Gillette's as a 5th grade teacher at Bullock.  Ms. Dean has worked in the pharmacy industry, the ministry, and has previous teaching experience.  She will no doubt do a fantastic job filling the "big shoes" left in Ms. Gillette's absence.

ESL TA:  I am thrilled to announce that Mr. Lopez will be joining us soon as the new ESL TA.  Mr. Lopez comes to us from Bogota, Columbia where he taught English.  His experience will complete the ESL dream team.

ScheduleOnce:  I have found a new and simple way to schedule time with me using our Google Calendar and Schedule Once.  Simply visit http://www.meetme.so/StefanieClarke.  Pick the date you would like to meet and select an open time.  We can use this for setting post-conferences, summatives or just time to get together.  The app syncs with my Google calendar.  It's quick and easy!

Intent Forms:  Please be sure to have intent forms turned-in by February 8th. The forms are used for planning purposes and are not binding.

Bookroom:  Ms. Lyon and others are in the process of overhauling the book room.  Please excuse the mess as folks work in that area.  Please put returned books in tubs on the table so that it does not throw-off the count of books that has already been complete.  The non-fiction list is forthcoming.

Learning Lab:  We are changing the process of Learning Lab slightly.  Once a week on Monday, Patrick will email the list of students required to attend after-school Learning Lab on Tuesday or Thursday.  Patrick will also notify the parents.  It is imperative that teachers carefully review the list each week to ensure that students report to the proper location.  Thanks for your help.

Retention:  It is the time of year to start thinking about retention.  If you are considering retention for a child, please follow the following steps.

100th Day parade:  1:30pm on February 9th

Jump Rope for Heart Kick-off:  1:00 K-2 and 1:30 3-5

College:  If you brought in your college gear for the college picture, I hope you will consider leaving it on display.  We want to build that college going atmosphere.

WIGs update:  Please input the percentage of students that grew according to mClass or quarterly assessments.  They can show growth in either to be considered as a 'yes' for growth.  To calculate, # of 'yes' for growth students / total students in class = X * 100.  Enter the percentage here by February 12th.

Data Wall:  Team Bullock is "rocking out" use of the data wall.  What a great experience for our students to see their growth.   If you have not already done so, please take a moment to update the data wall by February 12th.  The Data team has suggested a few options: 1) Bring students in small groups to help move their magnets and celebrate success, 2) The teacher/TA move the class w/o students, 3) Contact Mrs. Clarke, Mrs. Gaines, Mrs Chaney or Mr. Hurdt to help move your data if you need assistance.

Love the Bus:  Love the Bus week is February 8-12.  More details to come.

ACCESS testing:  ACCESS testing begins on February 15th-19th.

Instruction at Bullock: The instructional non-negotiables at Bullock are located at this link.
