Let's celebrate... Ms. Phillips, our school nurse,  and her healthy harassments. Ms. Shepard for her hard work in coordinating the Curriculum and Instruction Night.  Ms. Shepard did a great job of working with grade levels, communicating the plan, organizing volunteers and ordering the food.  Thank you also to the Community committee for their support.  Well done!   The teachers who prepared and presented for C&I night.  The event was a success and provided a valuable opportunity to communicate with our parents about how we are meeting the needs of all our students.   Ms. Cole for integrating music instruction into science and social studies and providing extra credit and grades for students to get credit for their hard work.   Ms. Falk, Ms. Gross, Ms. Gatten, and Ms. Hurdt for taking the time to create the hilarious Emotional Bank Account video. Ms. Mills, Ms. Ashworth, Ms. Lewis, Ms. Hamilton and the Traditions committee who are coordinating the Fall Festival.   Ms. O'Shaughnessy for planning Red Ribbon Week.

The Leader in Me monthly focus: Be Proactive.  Boosters and reminders (our structured calendar) will be provided on our Morning News. :) Don't forget to check-out SarahAnn Taylor's blog at sarahanntaylor.org. See last week's blog about Leadership Notebooks. Remeber the 'why.'  It is about setting goals and student accoutability.        We will be starting our 7x7 personal journey together soon.  Details to come from the Lighthouse Team.

• Monday - Red Ribbon week kick-off! Wear red.
• Tuesday - Follow your dreams for on-track Tuesday! Wear pajamas.
• Wednesday - We take care of our bodies and say no to drugs. Wear fitness gear.
• Thursday - Our future is bright with our careers in mind! Wear college and career gear
• Friday - Say boo to drugs!! Wear orange and black.

• Grades:  Grades need to be recorded by November 3rd.  

• Learning A-Z (K-2 only):  Please watch the video Joy provide prior to your November 4th PLC.  

• Visitors:  We will have visitors in our building on Monday, October 26th from 9:00-11:00.  They are coming to see the Leader in Me in action on a regular day of learning.  Please give these folks a warm Bullock welcome as they explore our school and see the great things happening at Bullock.  

• Mr. and Mrs. Leave a Legacy:  Please communicate with your students and their families to vote for Mr. and Ms. Leave a Legacy.  We have sent out a lot of communication, but we need to promote this fundraiser to raise money for our school and great charities.  The deadline for vote (money) is October 29th at 6:00pm. 

• Emotional Bank Account dues:  Please remember to pay your EBQ dues.  

• Staff member of the month:  Don't forget to nominate your collegues and celebrate the ways people "love, learn and lead" at Bullock.  

• Write-Ups:  Please remember that disciplinary write-ups should be completed within 24 hours of the incident.  A parent phone call must be made the day the event occurs and BEFORE a write-up will be processed.  Ideally, a write-up should be completed the day the incident occurs.  Ms. Perrell and I will not be able t0 process write-ups recieved after 24 hours.   

• IMPORTANT Open enrollment:  All LCS employees must sign and date that they have reviewed their health insurance package.  This must be completed no later than November 20th or you could lose your state health insurance.  Yikes.  The directions are located at https://goo.gl/1osvqo.  Please see Gail with any questions. 

• Young Authors: The theme for the 2015–2016 Young Authors’ Project is “Making the Most of Me.” Young Authors are encouraged to write about defining choices that have shaped their lives or their own journeys toward becoming the very best version of themselves. Authors may write prose or poetry, fiction or non-fiction.  Please see Charlene's email sent on October 20th. This writing exercise so aligns with our mission and vision.  Please make sure all students are permitted an opportuniy to participate.  

• Instruction:  Ms. Mills provided an excellent overview of the Calderon method of vocabulary acquisition.  Please consider where you can use these great strategies in your instruction.

Let's celebrate...  Alexandra Dowdy joining the Bullock team as a TA in Mrs. Hamilton's classroom.  Please show her a warm Bullock welcome.   The communication team:  Jennifer Welch, Ashley Dossenbach, Anna Hunter and Wendy Perrell for communicating on 5-6 mediums so effectively.  Our parents are totally "in the know."  Our team has been so on top to keeping our parents informed and celebrating our successes.  Awesome job team.   Ms. Rockwell and Mr. Hurdt for quickly offering to cover open duty positions.  You both are so kind to jump in to help ALL THE TIME.  Thank you! Ms. Wiltshire and Mr. Martin who have covered outside duty nearly every day this week while we were short DESPITE the fact that they have duty this week.  Thank you! Ms. Schlott for doing after school duty even though she is not even on the schedule.   Ms. Spivey, Ms. Wiltshire, and Ms. Woodell who dropped everything on Wednesday morning to redirect our morning car line when the second car in our car line broke down at the start of car line.   Ms. Townsend and her leadership with clubs.  Mindy has put in a tremendous amount of work planning and organizing our school wide clubs.  She has done a phenomenal job.  Great work Mindy!   Mrs. Mills, Mrs. Ashworth, Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Hamilton who are the Fall Festival leads. We all see you hard work and planning.  We are so appreciative of your efforts.  Fall Festival is going to be incredible.

You are doing a fantastic job.    Focus on getting a notebook set-up, writing wildly important goals (WIGs), tracking literacy assessments and coloring in ATBs.  Focus on academic progress and accountability.  That is the 'why' behind it all!   If you are ready, then you can move-on to determine individual strategies and score boarding progress.   If you are feeling especially confident, you can move-on to the "victories" and other sections of your Leadership Notebook.  You know your students best! Did you meet with your accountability partner?  I hope you connected to talk about your progress toward your goals and also talked about taking time to take care of yourself and "Sharpen that Saw."      We will be starting our 7x7 personal journey together soon.  Details to come from the Lighthouse Team.

• 1st quarter testing (can it really be that time already?):  Mrs. Perrell has created and shared the first quarter testing plan with the school.  The plan is located at https://goo.gl/tKv0Lz.  Please carefully read the plan.  Please note that all scores should be sent to Becky Maddox October 26th.  

• Mr. and Mrs. Leave a Legacy:  The top ten of Mr. and Ms. Leave a Legacy have been determined based on votes.  The students will be appearing on the morning news to promote their charity.  Please encourage your students and their families to continue to vote to benefit our school and a worthwhile charity. * I apologize for the typo in the handout that read "Mrs" rather than "Ms."  We will not be marrying off any of our students.  Geez!!  Sorry.  Thongs one week, now this.  What is next?

• Emotional Bank Account dues:  Please remember to pay for EBQ dues.  The dues allow us to take care of and love you and your family when you need it the most.  The EBQ dues also pay for fun events that keep us recharged and renewed.  Our EBQ team pays a pivotal role here at Bullock.  

• Clubs:  We have extended the deadline for students to choose clubs.  The team will take their time in making the final assignments and coordinating our school wide clubs.  More information will be distributed on how we'll use that hour that was designated for clubs in October.  It will be a reading activity or a session to help students/teachers in the club selection process.  

• Fall Festival:  Have you signed-up yet?  More details to come.  Thanks for supporting the wonderful Traditions committee and Mrs. Mills, Mrs. Ashworth, Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Hamilton who are coordinating this fun annual events for our students and community.  

• Curriculum and Instruction this Thursday:  The Curriculum and Instruction night will occur this Thursday on October 22^nd starting at 6:00pm.  Thank you for sharing your agenda.  This is sure to be an informative night for our parents. Please continue to remind parents to attend.  We will send school-wide reminders as well.  Go, go communication team!!!!

• Let's shop at Belk this Holiday season:  Now that's what we want to see in the Bullock Brief...shopping!  Belk will be running their Angel Days fundraising campaign from December 2nd through December 26th.  Customers can purchase a $5 angel pin and 100% of the of those sales go to Bullock.  Please encourage our parents and their families and friends to shop a Belks and give back to our school.  

• Instruction reflection:  Last week, I shared some resources in regards to explicit vocabulary instruction (see last week's blog).  I would like to ask that you reflect on your plans to see if you are addressing your student's vocabulary acquisition through research-based practices.  The Calderon 7 step method is still posted at the link provided as a reference.  I also sent another reminder about the importance of building time into the day for SSR.  In grades 2-5 (some 1st graders), our students should be reading trade books that an engaging.  Remember that I offered some blocks of time to allow our students more time to read: the 20 minute TLIM time, morning arrival, independent reading time, in lieu of iReady if the system is not working, in lieu of "seat work" during reading groups, etc.
