1 day to Leadership Day!  Community day - March 23rd.. Parent day - March 22nd.

Please see Taylor's email for specifics about Leadership Day practice on Monday and the logistics of the event on Tuesday and Wednesday. There are many moving parts so please make sure you are aware of the plan.

Monday, March 21st at 2:45pm:  Please meet in the Depot  briefly to discuss the projects that still need to be completed.  It's time to synergize!

Leadership Day Lunch schedule: Click here for the unique Leadership Day lunch schedule.  All classes (including K and cabooses) will be eating in their classrooms on March 22nd and March 23rd.

Shirts: Shirts will be distributed on Monday, March 21st.  Please DO NOT hand-out the shirts to your students on Monday.  You can certainly make sure they fit and make sure all students have a shirt, but please do not spend them home.  We will distribute the shirts on Tuesday morning for the students to wear for parent day.  Immediately after parent day, please have the students hand-in their shirts.  They are NOT to wear their shirts home.  We will pass-out the shirts again on Wednesday morning.  Students can wear the shirts home on Wednesday.  You can let parents know the color so they can plan the students pants.

Clean-up day success:  The school wide clean-up day was a huge success.  Our school looks amazing.  Nearly 800 people had to work together to help our building to shine and show our pride in B.T. Bullock.  Thank you all!

Million minute challenge: It is a requirement to enter your class's minutes read on the Million Minute Challenge spreadsheet.  Please make sure you are updating the spreadsheet weekly.

PTO...reminder:  Please continue to encourage your students' family and friends to volunteer at the PTO Thrift Shop.  Each class that works 10 hours will get a popcorn party.  We need 150 hours to get our PTO check each year.  This is the money the PTO uses to give you money to spend in your classrooms.  It's really important we get that check.  Also, please encourage raffle ticket sales. The winning ticket will be pulled on Tuesday afternoon.

The focus this month: Think win-win

7 days to Leadership Day!  Community day - March 23rd. Parent day - March 22nd.

Please make sure your bulletin boards are updated as we approach Leadership Day.  There are some blank boards in the building.  Please use the bulletin boards to showcase rigorous and exemplary student work.  Please make sure all bulletin boards are updated no later than March 16th.

Also please start planning and practicing your Leadership Day rotations. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase learning at Bullock.  We want every child to have their chance to shine.  Please see a member of the Traditions team or Ally Roberts with questions.  I know the team has shared resources to help make the centers easy to set-up.

More resources are located at the Leader in Me website.

Committees:  Committees will be meeting tomorrow.  This will be a big planning day for several of our committees to prepare for the upcoming Leadership Day. Super job synergizing to make Bullock such a special learning environment for our students. It takes every person working toward a common goal.

Optional teacher workday March 15: We will hold an election on our campus on the 15th Teachers can do a provisional out-of-precinct vote at Bullock.  You will need to show your ID. Please do not park in the front two quadrants of the parking lot (directly in front of the front walk-way nearest the gym) on election day.

DonorsChoose:  Congratulations to Sara McHugh for getting her Chromebooks for K project fully funded.  That is so exciting!  The shipment of new computers for her classroom are on the way.

New staff/SMARTboard laptops:  I am thrilled to announce that 15 new laptops for teachers to use with their SMARTboards have arrived.  Ms. Frausto created a list of the rooms/teachers with the greatest need for a technology refresh.  She will continue distributing those computers on Monday.

Staff meeting, March 21st:  The staff meeting on March 21st is cancelled.  Please do reserve that time to assist our Traditions Committee on last minute preparations for Leadership Day.  It will be a fun afternoon of synergizing.

PTO:  Please continue to encourage your student's family and friends to volunteer at the PTO Thrift Shop.  Each class that works 10 hours will get a popcorn party.  We need 150 hours to get our PTO check each year.  Also, please encourage raffle ticket sales.  The more we sell the more money for our PTO to support our wonderful school!  Our next PTO board meeting is March 17th.

Accident report:  Please remember to complete accident reports if a student is injured.  The forms are available in the office.  Please be sure to document your contact with the parent.  Each completed form is signed by the principal and kept on file.

Discipline refresh: The Lighthouse Team convened to discuss some ways to help with student discipline within the TLIM culture.  Please remember that reflection should be used for minor in-class offenses.  Offenses that break the Lee County of Conduct, or offenses related to student safety, need to be written-up.  For high-flyers, please chose an appropriate buddy room that can help to redirect inappropriate student behavior. Consider selecting a prior teacher, club leader or someone else who has a connection with the student rather than the regular buddy room.  You want that individual to be authoritative, yet committed to helping the student change their behavior.  If you need help finding the right buddy, please contact a member of the Lighthouse Team, Ms. OShaughnessy or admin. We will be using behavior essays and vocabulary expander exercises in BIP to change the reflection process and challenge our students.

Bullock clean-up day:  We will have a Bullock clean-up day on March 18th from 1:00-2:00. I am so excited.  This is school is going to sparkle from top the bottom.  The assigned areas are noted below.

The focus this month: Think win-win

We are on week 7 of our 7x7 contract.

Our first Leadership Day will take place on March 23rdParent day is March 22nd.

The audition results will be announced no later than Wednesday, March 9th.  Our students did a remarkable job.  Thank you to all the staff members who were on the audition team as well as the dozens of staff members who covered classrooms and chipped-in to help to make the Leadership Day auditions a success.

Please make sure your bulletin boards are updated as we approach Leadership Day.  There are some blank boards in the building.  Please use the bulletin boards to showcase rigorous and exemplary student work.  Please make sure all bulletin boards are updated no later than March 16th.

Also please start planning your Leadership Day rotations.  Please see a member of the Traditions team or Ally Roberts with questions.

________________________________________________

Please revisit last week's blog in regards to levels of questioning to be sure you are increasing the rigor of questioning (aim for Costas 2 and 3).  I did not notice discussions about the levels of questioning in your PLC minutes.  Please be sure to etch out some time to discuss questions that are being used in class and for nightly reading reflections.  We have less than 13 instructional weeks before the end of the school year. We need to provide opportunities for our students to stretch beyond their comfort level at this stage in the game.

________________________________________________

Election on campus March 15th:  We will hold an election on our campus on March 15th  Teachers can do a provisional out-of-precinct vote at Bullock.  You will need to show your ID. The 15th will be an optional teacher workday.  Please do not park in the front two quadrants of the parking lot (directly in front of the front walk-way nearest the gym) on election day.

Bullock parking lot:  Please remember that the front quadrant of our parking lot is reserved for guests every day.  It one small way to live our mission by making our guest's visit more convenient.

Peer observations:  Peer observers, please see the list of peer observations from Mrs. Perrell.  Peer observations are due before we leave for Spring Break.

Lock-down procedures:  Please review soft and hard lock-down procedures for a drill in the upcoming weeks.

Platform 9 3/4:  Platform 9 3/4 is a busy place.  We have two ESL classes, Read to Achieve, Intervention groups, AND Habit 7 media class operating out of that space.  In order to maintain a quiet learning environment, our library needs to be a whisper zone.  Whispering in a library is common courtesy for library patrons and a good habit for our students to learn.  Please remind your students of this rule.

Recess:  Please be reminded that teachers and TAs need to spread-out and supervise during recess time.  The large majority of discipline write-ups and/or injuries occur during recess.  For the 5th and 3rd grade teachers, please create a rotation schedule so that 3rd and 5th grade students have equal access to the playground and field.  For the classes on the field, please remember to bring equipment for the students to play with every day.  Mr. Martin can help provide equipment to keep our students engaged in fun physical activities.

Tornado Drill: I know we are ready for this one.  The statewide tornado drill will be held March 9th at 9:30am.

Quarterly Tests:  The week of March 14th.

Instructional Tip:  Check out this PowerPoint on teaching academic vocabulary provided by DPI.  There are tons of practical strategies to scaffold learning and provide context (and correlations) for academic vocabulary.  Teaching academic vocabulary is an instructional expectation at Bullock.

IMPORTANT....Instruction at Bullock: Please remember the high-yield strategies that need to be included in your instruction.  Please discuss how you are addressing these expectations within your PLCs.

  • Reteach 2-3 concepts each day.
  • Include many opportunities for open-ended writing (with guidance and correction).
  • Use tutors for remediation and using research-based programs to help our struggling readers.
Continue....
  • To require reading EVERY night and provide time for reading during the school day.
  • To select materials that push reading levels.
  • Teach academic vocabulary (see details above).  Teach and review, review, review.
  • Provide time for error correction.
  • Review multiplication (in upper grades)
  • All teachers in grades 3-5 must should be using Stretch Math as part of your instruction.

Visit http://www.meetme.so/StefanieClarke to schedule time to meet with me.
