Staff meeting: April 17th at 2:45pm in the Platform.  Agenda [link here].

3-5 Quarterly Testing: Our 3-5 students will be taking a cumulative assessment to gather instructional information on April 18-20.  Wendy has shared the testing plan [link here]. Please review prior to testing.

Lighthouse meeting: April 21st at 2:45pm in the front conference room.

Staff meeting cancelled on 5/1: In lieu of a staff meeting on May 1st, we will be gathering to create our 2017-18 calendar.  I would like for anyone who would like to place an event on the calendar  to attend or to send a representative.  This calendar will include:  Open house, C&I Night,  ESL nights, Fall Festival, Leadership Day, etc.  We will meet in the Platform. It was so helpful to "begin with the end in mind" early last year so we can plan ahead.

Assistant Principal week: Last week was Assistant Principal's week.  Since we were out, we will be celebrating our amazing assistant principal, Wendy Perrell, this week April 17th-21st.  We are so blessed to have Ms. Perrell here at Bullock.  Her professionalism, kind heart, instructional leadership, and organizational ability are just a few of the extraordinary qualities she brings to Bullock every day.  She embodies our mission in all she does.  I am honored to work along side her.   I hope that you will show her some love this week, and as you are able, please have your students sign the banner that will be located in the front lobby.

PTO Thrift Shop: The PTO Thrift Shop is accepting nominations for staff members who would be willing to serve on the board.  If you are interested, please let me know via email.

SafeSchool Modules:  Our last round of safe school modules are due on Friday April 21st.  Woo hoo.

Food safety: Please let our cafĂ© ladies if you have any concerns over the serving or handling of food in our Dining Hall.  They would be happy to help and take great pride in the quality of food service for our students.

EVAAS Roster Verification: The EVAAS roster verification window will be opening on April 21st. More info to come.

Books Needs:  I would like to gather together The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People books to distribute to our new hires to read.  If you are not currently reading the book, please bring it the staff meeting tomorrow.

Sing for a Cure:  The Bullock choir will be singing at an event hosted by East Lee Middle School to raise money for cancer research.  Living our mission through synergizing with our community to help others.

Instructional Time: Please make sure that there are no interruptions to your core reading and math times.  Our kiddos need core  literacy and math every day. If you are experiencing challenges, please let us know so we can help protect "big rock" time.

Monthly focus:  Seek First to Understand and then to be understood

Communication is the most important skill in life. You spend years learning how to read and write, and years learning how to speak. But what about listening? What training have you had that enables you to listen so you really, deeply understand another human being? Probably none, right?

If you're like most people, you probably seek first to be understood; you want to get your point across. And in doing so, you may ignore the other person completely, pretend that you're listening, selectively hear only certain parts of the conversation or attentively focus on only the words being said, but miss the meaning entirely. So why does this happen? Because most people listen with the intent to reply, not to understand. You listen to yourself as you prepare in your mind what you are going to say, the questions you are going to ask, etc. You filter everything you hear through your life experiences, your frame of reference. You check what you hear against your autobiography and see how it measures up. And consequently, you decide prematurely what the other person means before he/she finishes communicating. Do any of the following sound familiar?

"Oh, I know just how you feel. I felt the same way." "I had that same thing happen to me." "Let me tell you what I did in a similar situation."

Because you so often listen autobiographically, you tend to respond in one of four ways:

Evaluating:You judge and then either agree or disagree.
Probing:You ask questions from your own frame of reference.
Advising:You give counsel, advice, and solutions to problems.
Interpreting:You analyze others' motives and behaviors based on your own experiences.
