Week 33: May 1-5

Bullock Brief

Our wonderful PTO has planned a fun week to honor our hard working teachers.  We surely appreciate you and the tireless work you put into helping our students to learn and grow. We have an incredible team here at Bullock. We know that it takes the "village" to make the school run and so appreciate the teacher assistants, child nutrition staff, custodial staff, and support staff who use their talents and skills to ensure that we prepare our students to "be leaders with a purpose."  Thanks for all that you do.  Enjoy the week!

Instruction: Please use the item analysis to map out your instructional plan over the next few weeks.  Please make sure you are building in spiral review, spiral review, spiral review each day.  With only 5 days until the mClass window opens, 19 days before the science EOG, and 21 days before the reading and math EOG, we must make sure we are maximizing our time.

  • Ensure spiral review is built into lessons every day.
  • Focus on teaching text structure (especially in grades 3-5).
  • Students should be taught to write their thinking as they read.
  • Calculators need to be used every day in 3-5 classes.
  • Teach and review academic vocab [link here].

Calendar meeting: We will gather in the Platform for the 2017-18 calendar planning meeting at 2:45pm.  All folks who would like to place an event on the calendar or would like input on dates should plan to attend.  As we did last year, we will not add events (except field trips) after the calendar is set.

Jungle Book:  We will have the first ever B.T. Bullock musical starting on Thursday May 4th at 7:00pm at the Broadway auditorium.  We will also have a Friday, May 5th showing at 7:00, and two showing on Saturday, May 6th at 3:00pm and 7:00pm.  Tickets are free and can be picked-up in the office.

EVAAS Roster Verification: The roster verification window is open the end of May. Please let admin know if you have any questions.

PLCs: Now that 3rd-5th cumulative data has arrived, teams should focus on using the item analysis to determine what skills need to be reviewed and retaught.
  • It came to my attention that some grade levels did not meet when their PLC coverage was not provided.  PLCs should meet weekly.  If we cannot provide additional coverage (covering recess), teams should use their daily planning during Habit 7 or meet after school. Please let Wendy and I know when you are meeting so we can join in the fun.
Discipline:  There have been some questions about communicating discipline.  Wendy and have been placing the paperwork for discipline (with the consequence and dates) in teacher mailboxes.  We will start delivering that paperwork directly to teachers so you know the dates of the consequence more immediately.  Thanks for your feedback.

Book study:  The Next Steps in Guided Reading and The Artisan Teacher book studies are on SchoolLink.  They were placed on School Link in January.  The sign-in sheets for the sessions will be in PLCs.  Be make sure to sign-in for completed sessions.

Student safety:  Please remember to synergize during the dismissal of buses if a driver is running behind.  Sometimes our drivers are covering classrooms until the bell rings and they need a moment to gather their things.  If you see a line form by a bus, please step-in to help supervise the line by standing by the bus until the driver arrives.

Fire Marshall check:  Mr. McIver has provided a list of reminders for our upcoming fire inspection. Thanks for being so proactive.

  • Make sure you have the right wattage of buld in your lamps.
  • We are not supposed to have anything hanging from the ceiling or blinds.
  • Curtains must be fire proofed.
  • Limit the use of rugs.
  • No plug in air fresheners.

PDP:  It's time to finish your PDP for the year.  Please update your end-of-year PDP in NCEES no later than May 8th.  We will plan to discuss both your summative and PDP during your upcoming summative conference. For staff members with summatives this week, we will hold a separate PDP meeting if you are not prepared in time for our meeting.

Volunteers:  If you have volunteers that you would like to add to the volunteer luncheon invite list, please email Jennifer Welch.

TA evaluation:  All teachers with a teacher's assistant should complete an evaluation [link here] by May 12th.  We will hold summative conferences the week of May 15th.  Teachers should complete the eval and submit digitally through email or Google sharing.  Please set a time to meet with admin using the MeetMe link [link here].

End of year party:  The end-of-year party is scheduled for Friday June 9th starting at 12pm (Ashley will be sending an update).  Lunch will be served followed by an end-of-year celebration. It will be a wonderful time to celebrate together.  All staff are invited. First Baptist Church will be providing lunch on June 8th at 12:30pm (on the 1/2 day).  The cumulative folder party will be that afternoon.
